What’s next

Once you’ve successfully completed this climb, you will have gained the necessary experience to climb on Kyajo Ri, Mount Nun and Mount Tetnuldi

Upon your arrival, a representative from Wild Guanabana will be waiting outside the airport gates to take you to the hotel. Depending on time of arrival, plans will be made for a briefing meeting once you have settled in. Please let us know if there is anything special you would like to do while in Kathmandu and we can help you arrange that.
Transfer to domestic airport to board an incredible 45-minute mountain flight through the Himalayas. From Lukla, we trek downhill towards the Dudh Koshi (milky river), a raging river that flows from the glacier of the highest mountains. The trail is fairly easy and well marked and meanders around the fields of potatoes and wheat. We will pass through many traditional villages to reach the vicinity of Phakding for our first overnight stay.
After Breakfast we start our trek passing through pine forest, rhododendron, magnolia and cultivated terraces. We cross and re-cross the thundering glacial river of the day before to reach the mountain capital aka Namche Bazaar. We are now in the Sagarmatha National Park property. We will often see groups of yaks carrying trek gear and goods being traded along the trail. Spectacular mountain peaks like Nupla (5,885m), Kongde Ri (6,093 m) and Thamserku (6,808m) rise majestically above us throughout most of the day. Average trekking time is 5 to 6 hours.
It’s important to spend an extra night at Namche Bazaar for acclimatization purposes before venturing higher. There is plenty to do around the valley’s central trading hub. We will do a short day hike up to the Everest View Hotel in Shyangboche for stunning views of Ama Dablam and Mount Everest. Average trekking time is 4-5 hours.
We leave for Thyangboche early in the morning after breakfast. The trail follows around the ridges and offers spectacular views of Ama Dablam. Everest can be clearly seen on the horizon before we descend through splendid rhododendron forests for lunch. After lunch we cross Dudh Koshi river once again and begin a long winding ascent that takes us to the famous Buddhist monastery of Thyangboche (built in 1912 and considered the spiritual and cultural center of these highlands). The monastery has been recently re-built with the assistance of Sir Edmund Hillary after it was destroyed by fire in 1989. As this area is a devout Buddhist region, the wild life is unharmed so there is always a possibility that we may see some wild animals such as musk deer, mountain goat and Pheasants in the forest. Average trekking time is 6-7 hours.
The trail now ascends up to Imja Khola before an easy climb along a wide open trail to a small mountain village named Pangboche (3,901m). Incredibly, there is a similar number of Sherpa’s here who have climbed Everest than the rest of the world combined! We may take a slight detour to visit an old monastery where Lama Geishi gives his blessings to those attempting to stand on Sagarmatha highest point. Then we head gradually uphill to Dingboche as the trail passes through the valley surrounded by awe-inspiring mountains all around. Average trekking time is 6-7 hours.
Today will be a rest day at Dingboche where you can go for a short acclimatization hike before we head further up
We leave DIngboche this morning to go up another 500m to Chukhang Ri at 4.710m. Today is a long day of trekking, around 7-8 hours
Today we will go on an excursion around Chukhung Ri to better acclimatize ourselves on this high altitude and to rest a bit before we start the climb
The real stuff begins today as we head towards Island Peak Base Camp for our first night spent out in tents.
Today is the big day as we head off to the summit early in the morning. Your guide will be teaching you all the needed techniques for climbing all the way up to the summit and you will be rewarded with magnificent views and a great sense of accomplishment. After taking some pictures, we will start heading back to base camp for our night there.
After breakfast, we pack our tents and continue with the descent to Pangboche at 3,975m
After breakfast we head back down to Namche Bazar for our last night there and to bid this beautiful town farewell. Trekking around 6-7 hours
We retrace our steps along the river. It is a beautiful and easy walk through pine and rhododendron forest with a view of Kusum Kanguru and other splendid mountains behind us before a gradual climb out of the river valley to the trek starting point Lukla to savor our final mountain sunset of the trek as we complete this exhilarating journey. Average trekking time is 7-8 hours.
Early morning we once again board our flight through the Himalayan mountain range back to Kathmandu. On arrival, we are transferred to our hotel. The remainder of the day is free. This day also acts as a buffer day in case our flight to or from Lukla is cancelled for weather reasons.
There are plenty of interesting sites to visit in the Kathmandu valley like the Old Palaces at Patan, Bhaktapur, Durbar square, Swayambhunath (the monkey temple or you may wonder downtown Thamel to shop for souvenirs and sample the various restaurants of Kathmandu. We are happy to offer you some recommendations.
We will transfer you to the airport and assist with check-in procedures.

Terrain

The first few days of the hike, you will be hiking through forests, crossing bridges and passing by running rivers. The scenery is unbelievable and the sound of the flowing water will keep your mind at ease. Once you start gaining more altitude, the terrain changes from forests ridges overlooking green fields. The higher up you go, the more rocky it becomes and the green starts to be replaced with snowy mountain tops and a rocky trail. Once you get to Island Peak base camp, everything will turn into white as the mountain is completely covered in snow. You will learn how to walk in crampons and how to use your ice axe to help you along the ridges and some basic climbing and ropes techniques.

However, this trip is designed to help you acclimatise in the best way possible to avoid any altitude sickness problems. You will be gaining more altitude each day as you go higher but at a moderate speed so your body will have enough time to get accustomed to the lower oxygen levels

Food

During the hike, you will have 3 meals, all energy based to help give you the required nutrients for hiking around 7 hours a day. Breakfast and dinner are prepared by the tea houses and lunch is taken at other guest houses along the way while hiking. Nepali mountain food is very delicious and has its own flavour, we recommend you go for the Dhal Bat which is a typical Nepalese dish and very high on energy. Try to stay away from any meat during the hike.

Accommodation

In Kathmandu, we will be staying in the heart of Kathmandu and if you just step out of your hotel and find all the hustle bustle of Thamel around you. Once you reach Lukla, you will be hiking from one village to the next and spending your nights in tea houses, which are family owned guest houses for trekkers passing along the way. Rooms are double or triple with beds and blankets to keep you warm. All tea houses have a main room where all hikers gather for meals, briefings or just to chill and play card games. They are all heated with a huge fireplace in the center so you will definitely be warm. All of them have wifi available for purchase as well as electricity (at an extra cost) for those who want to charge their cameras, phones...etc. Most of them also sell snacks, energy bars, juice and water. On the last 2 days of the ascent, you will be leaving the villages and packing your camping gear as these days will give you the true camping experience on the mountain.
